Three Easy Classroom Activities to Increase Student Engagement

1. Get Them Talking

While online games and simulations—like Frax—help students learn math concepts like fractions, there is still a need for more than just “finishing the section/module/mission/assignment.”

Discussions among classmates are a great opportunity for students to process their thinking verbally. But how do you spark those conversations?

2. Try Offline Activities

After completing your discussion, boost student engagement with offline activities. Frax includes Captain’s Checkpoints that build upon the online activities students have already completed. Browse some of our additional free resources below.

3. Celebrate the Wins

Celebrating success in math is just as important as achieving success in math. Rewards motivate learners to keep going!

Looking for an even easier way to teach fractions?

With personalized instruction, exciting challenges, and motivating rewards, Frax ensures kids really “get” fractions. Your students' intergalactic adventure awaits!

  • Frax comes complete with discussion topics, where students are encouraged to explain what they did and why at the end of every mission.

Warm Students up With an Online Activity or Video.

  • “How did you know which size blocks you needed to use, and how many?” Dig deeper to help students process those bits of information and strategy.

Ask Questions!

  • “Get students talking and thinking in pairs. When working individually, kids often don’t process or talk about what they’re learning.

Partner Up!

  • Use these tools to visually reinforce fraction knowledge at every level. Download our free activity guide with block templates and number lines included.

Fraction Blocks & Number Lines

  • Pair your students up to use our premade task cards and answer sheets. Begin by placing one task card on each pair’s desk.
  • Students start by answering the card on their own desk, discussing the answer and how they know it is correct. After an appropriate amount of time, the teacher says “SCOOT”.
  • Students will then move to the next desk to complete the next card. Continue until every pair has completed every card.

Scoot

  • Hide task cards around your classroom or in the hallway area.
  • Pairs of students can find the cards while discussing and answering them on a clipboard.

Scavenger Hunt

  • Recognizing each knowledge checkpoint is important, and provides a moment for students to reflect and develop true understanding. With Frax, celebrating students' passage to the next mission is simple. At each of our Captain's Checkpoints, you’ll have access to suggestions, resources, discussion materials, and celebration ideas to tie it all together for your students.

Recognize Each Checkpoint

  • Serve up block-shaped treats and block-shaped prizes, and you can be sure students will try that much harder to see what else you have in store.

Throw a “Block Party”!

  • Give out stickers or sweets each time students meet their individual goals.
